I can always tell what kind of run I had when I roll out of bed the next morning...
Yesterday I started the run by saying "I'm not doing 4 miles today!" Well when we finished, my running app said I had completed 4.03 miles! Then we did 20-shots, our regular medicine ball games, some leg lifts, then jumped a little rope. I tracked the distance for 20-shots, and logged another .7 miles. So I figured I wouldn't be able to move today...
Nope. I rolled out of bed at 6:00 this mornin, on a snow day! I was ready to go, but went back to bed. Around 10 is when I was conscious again, and I was stiff. I can feel the muscles growing, but it's not too bad. Thankful this morning that I'm able to move, after going farther yesterday than I had in probably 6 months...and more consecutive days running than ever!!!
Yesterday was day 6, and today is day 7 on our streak...I'm gonna have to get a calendar to keep up with it when this month is over!

Like a Virgin
Right now, as I type this, I am being devirginized in the blogging world (it's quite painless).
Today, we were forced to run the halls instead of around the gym which makes for a more enjoyable run in my opinion. I say more enjoyable because there are new surroundings, and I am not bored by all of the ads on the walls of the gym. I should have them all memorized by now. However, a few downsides include Ghost Boy prancing around in the crawlspace above the ceiling tiles, imagining I am seeing people in the classrooms, and seeing my reflection in the windows. From these downsides, I'm sure one would gather that I'm rather paranoid, but I assure you I am perfectly sane ;). And from my comment on the reflection, I have never understood why there are mirrors in weight rooms. I, personally, don't want to see myself struggling to lift a 10 lb. dumbbell.
I have had the same pair of tennis shoes for 3+ years now. They are bound to have 1000+ miles on them. They have been run*** ragged. Back when I was in grade school and high school, I would get a new pair every summer before school would start. So none of my tennis shoes were a part of my life for a long period of time. But with these last shoes, we have had quite the long relationship. I've known that I need a new pair for quite a while now, but it's so hard to commit to another pair when I've been with these for so long. I finally bought a pair yesterday. Now, if you've looked at the selection of running shoes these days, you'll notice at least two things: ridiculously bright colors and that these shoes are as light as a feather. Took a while to find a pair that didn't blind me when I looked at them. Ran in them for the first mile and immediately changed back into my others. I could hear my old ones in my head singing, "Can't you see-e-e, you belong with me-e-e."
Three virgin-y things happened to me today (great way to start off 2014):
1. first time blogging
2. first time running the halls
3. first time running seriously in a different pair of shoes
I need to figure out how to transition from paragraph to paragraph better. ~ Larissa "Slower than Usain Bolt"

Day 4 (in a row)
Today is day 4, and I'm feeling the burn.
Trying to get back to where we were 6 months ago is harder than starting fresh in my opinion. I think it's harder because of the mental game of knowing where we were, and your body not wanting to do as much as it could before.
We put in 3 miles today...which took a lot! Luckily we know our mileage is accurate now because we physically measured the court perimeter yesterday. Turns out 17, not 20, laps is a mile! So now my phone is calibrated and it's readings are more accurate!
My "bad" knee hurt during the run today, probably from doing too much too quick, and it may have been compensating from my left hip being sore this morning. Soon my body will be getting back on track, I just need to be patient. ~ Sandy "Slower Than Your Grandma"

How it all started (Sandy's version...)
May 14, 2012
This is the day that everything changed...and everything started.
Larissa and I had walked a couple of times together the week before, and we casually mentioned starting to run.
Let me back up a little bit. You see, I personally don't really feel like I benefit as much from just walking...despite what research shows, my stubborn brain just doesn't believe I've exercised enough if I can still move easily after I exercise. I blame the years of playing basketball and softball for this psychological problem. Also on the other hand, I had told myself I hated running for so long that I actually believed it. Again I blame growing up playing sports where coaches used running laps, suicides, killer drills, and such as punishment for not performing above par.
I was doomed before I started.
Flash forward to 2012. I was 30, and a music teacher at 4 different schools. I was also teaching private music lessons after school, so obviously I had tons of free time. The first weekend of that May I played in a co-ed softball tournament. Frustration was the only thing that can be said about that tournament. I was "washed up." After having knee surgery years before, going through college, and the first several years of stress from teaching, this athlete wasn't able to do anything that she was used to years before.
Then the casual mention of starting a running habit. I thought about it a few days, found my old MP3 players, downloaded a C25K podcast, and showed up that May 14th for our walking plans with the intent to run.
I had read a quote the weekend before that simply said "If not now, when?" And that is what made me decide May 14th would be the day e started a marvelous journey on foot, running.
Flash forward again. Now, after a little more than a year and a half running, my runnin buddy and I have decided on a new goal. A combination goal of running our first half marathon this year and running everyday. Today, January 3rd, we are on a 3 day running streak so far (I know that's nothing to brag about), but we've decided to start this blog as a sort of "running journal" and a way for us to log this adventure.
Readers beware, we are doing this to continue our motivation...so there probably won't be much in this blog other than running "stuff." ~Sandy "Slower Than Your Grandma"
Here's a pic from our first 5K back in July 2012!
